This exhibition aims to contextualize the contemporary work of fifteen artists that represent various tribal nations. Formed in the mid-2000s, HUMBLE is an interdisciplinary art collective of students at the time studying at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexica. Today, members have continued their art practices, have furthered their studios, and continue to exhibit nationally and internationally.
In its time, HUMBLE functioned as a DIY art space and held numerous art shows, concerts, and late-night painting sessions. Although the collective ceased operations in 2010, the core mission continues to reflect on each independent practice. HUMBLE brought awareness to the underdeveloped area of southern Santa Fe and most importantly amplified underrepresented voices. Their accomplishments are exemplary in a time when culture is awakening and reconciling with the potential of art, community, and history.
The purpose of this exhibit is to create a space that lauds these cultural producers, in a collective platform. It will establish a conversation with native artists residing and working in New York City and bring together a platform that breaks away at a too often homogenous voice of indigeneity.
